A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on the night of August 31, 2025, with its epicenter near the Kunar–Nangarhar border. The shallow depth of just 8 km intensified destruction across Kunar Province, leaving entire districts in ruins.

Key Impacts

  • Casualties: More than 1,411 confirmed dead and 3,124 injured, numbers continue to rise as rescue teams access remote villages.

  • Housing & Infrastructure: Mud-and-stone homes collapsed in large numbers; schools, clinics, and mosques have been destroyed.

  • Geographic Impact: Villages in Nur Gal, Sawki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara are among the hardest hit.

  • Access & Rescue Challenges: Roads blocked by landslides, disrupted communications, and limited helicopter access are delaying life-saving relief.

District-Level Impact

The devastation is concentrated in five districts, with Nur Gal and Sawki among the most severely affected. Access roads like Dewa Gul (Sawki) and Mazar Dara (Nur Gal) remain blocked, cutting off families from aid.

Immediate Humanitarian Needs

The affected population is in urgent need of:

  • Emergency shelter: tents, tarpaulins, and blankets.

  • Medical support: mobile clinics, essential medicines, and surgical care.

  • Food assistance: ready-to-eat meals and clean drinking water.

  • Search-and-rescue equipment: heavy tools and trained responders.

  • Psychosocial care: trauma counseling for survivors, especially children.
